At 10:35 on December 29, 2014, the Louisburg Township Rural Fire Department in Elk City, Kansas, was paged to a reported structure fire.
First-responding personnel noted a visible heavy column of smoke while responding to the station and they promptly asked for mutual aid from Montgomery County Fire, which responded a quick attack and Class A pumper from the Independence Rural division along with with seven firefighters.
Arriving units reported a fully involved one-story wood framed dwelling with an attached addition. It was reported that the dwelling was vacant.
Crews went to a defensive attack and protected endangered exposures on the D side of the home.
Upon arrival, the Independence quick attack unit stretched to the B-C corner and started an exterior attack while the pumper laid in with large diameter hose to the A side of the structure. Handlines were stretched and placed in defensive positions.
Upon collapse of the roof, the pumpers master stream was brought to bear, which allowed for a quick knockdown of the remaining fire.
Crews were on scene for approximately 1.5 hours.
Montgomery County Sheriffs Office responded with two deputies along with one ALS medic unit from the city of Independence.
The cause is listed as suspicious and is under investigation.
