NYC EMS Chief Demoted for Storm Response

The chief of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) Emergency Medical Service (EMS), John Peruggia, was replaced after sharp criticism of the department’s response during the post-Christmas blizzard. Peruggia will remain with the department in a different role.

During the storm, thousands of 911 calls were backlogged, ambulances wer stuck in the snow, and additional responders and ambulances were required from Upstate New York and New Jersey. In one instance, a Brooklyn newborn died after a nine-hour wait for emergency help to arrive.
