Fatal New Jersey House Fire Started Accidentally

Investigators have determined the Brick Township house fire that killed a 66-year-old woman early Saturday morning started accidentally, reports nj.com.

Shortly before 4 a.m. on Saturday, Brick fire fighters responded to 74 Dock Road for a reported structure fire with an entrapment.

Units arrived to find the home fully involved in fire with a concentration of the fire emanating from the master bedroom, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Upon extinguishing the fire, responders found the home’s only occupant — 66-year-old Grace Merkel — deceased within the structure, the prosecutor’s office said.

An autopsy conducted by Dr. Neil Brodsky of the Ocean County Medical Examiners Office determined the burn injuries Merkel received were consistent with the fire and that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death. As a result, Brodsky classified the cause of death to have been accidental, authorities said.
