An elderly woman was killed in a three-alarm fire that injured at least two others in Paterson, New Jersey. Firefighters were also injured in the early-morning incident.
The Record reported (http://bit.ly/Nv7iYR) that passing fire department emergency medical unit spotted the fire about 6:40 a.m. and called firefighters to the scene. They found one woman on the ground who jumped from a window of the 2½-story home.
Rescuers in the ambulance erected a ladder found at the home and helped one woman who was about to jump from another window while firefighters rescued two others. Four residents were taken to an area medical facility.
Two of the injured, the homeowner’s grandchildren, were later taken to a medical center in the Bronx, where they were listed in critical condition and suffering from smoke inhalation. The woman who jumped was also critical.
The body of the homeowner’s wife was found in the home.
Three firefighters suffered burns and were hospitalized.
