FDNY Can Hire 300 Probies from Discriminatory Test

A judge who ruled that the Fire Department of New York’s (FDNY) written test discriminates against minorities will allow New York City to hire 300 probationary firefighters from among those who participated in the latest exam process, according to a report in the Daily News. The judge had earlier ruled the test was as “tainted” as two previous exams that had been ruled illegal, but wrote that the needs of the city and fire department took precedence. He gave the city a choice of hiring procedures, which, by the judge’s own admission, “resemble racial quotas.” The city must decide on which hiring method to use by noon Friday.
