FDNY Reveals Cause of Fire That Killed FDNY Firefighter

An air conditioner electrical cord pinched between a bed frame and wall started the fire that killed Lt. Gordon Ambelas, according to the Fire Department of New York (FDNY).

Ambelas died after sustaining multiple injuries at a fire in a high-rise public-housing building in Brooklyn Saturday night. He was injured while performing a search in a burning apartment on the structure’s 19th floor, according to FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro.

The wake for Lieutenant Ambelas will be held at  Casey McCallum Rice Funeral Home, 30 Nelson Ave. in Staten Island. July 8, 2-4pm & 7-9pm; July 9, 2-4pm & 7-9pm.

It was the FDNY’s first firefighter line-of-duty death since Lt. Richard A. Nappi was killed in a Brooklyn warehouse fire in April 2012.

A 6-year-old girl died in a North Philadelphia rowhouse fire early Friday morning. Multiple other people, including an 8 year-old boy, were hospitalized.
