WETHERSFIELD, Conn. (AP) — Two tractor-trailers collided and burst into flames Monday in Connecticut, causing serious injuries and forcing the closure of both sides of a major route just south of Hartford, police said.
The crash was reported at about 9:30 a.m. Monday in Wethersfield in the southbound lanes of the Berlin Turnpike, also known as routes 5 and 15.
Police said it wasn’t immediately clear how many people were injured, what their conditions were or what caused the accident.
“We had fuel on fire down in the storm drains,” said Capt. Mark Mahder of the Wethersfield Volunteer Fire Department. “We had two trucks burning. We had power lines down. It was just a chaotic situation.”
Wethersfield police are investigating the cause of the crash.
The northbound lanes of the turnpike were reopened shortly after 11:30 a.m., but the southbound lanes remained closed.
State environmental crews were at the scene helping clean up the fuel spill.
