Fire Above Historic Post Office in Santa Cruz (CA) Mountains Sends Three to the Hospital

Dec. 13—An overnight blaze at an apartment above a post office in the Santa Cruz mountains sent two children and one adult to the hospital.

The fire occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Friday in the unit above the Brookdale Post Office located at 105 Pacific St., the Boulder Creek Volunteer Fire Department said in a Facebook post.

Seven people and two dogs were inside the building, the fire department said. Four people were rescued by neighbors while three others, two children and one man, remained trapped inside until firefighters arrived on the scene.

Fire crews rescued the man and one of the children, and they found the other child unconscious in the apartment. All three people were transported to a local hospital.

The fire department said those rescued are “doing well” after suffering smoke inhalation and burns. One dog made it out of the apartment, and another died from the fire.

The historic post office didn’t burn but had water damage, the fire department said.

The post office is temporarily closed, the United States Postal Service said in a statement. Residents can go to the Boulder Creek Post Office at 200 Lorenzo Street to retrieve their mail from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays, and they can retrieve packages from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m on Saturday.

The fire department is investigating the cause of the blaze.

Boulder Creek Volunteer Fire Department did not respond to SFGATE’s request for additional information.
