Fire at Quincy (MA) Sewage Plant Injures Five

Five Massachusetts Water Resources Authority maintenance workers are being treated at Boston Medical Center for smoke-related complaints after escaping a two-alarm underground fire at the Nut Island sewage treatment plant in Quincy, reports The Boston Herald (http://tinyurl.com/jgxgcg6)

MWRA spokeswoman Ria Convery said the fire broke out at the Sea Street facility shortly after 1 p.m. in an area of a building that is three stories underground.

Convery said there is no impact to drinking water.

The plant screens sewage flow from 18 communities south of Boston before sending the water on through a 5-mile tunnel under Boston Harbor to Deer Island in Winthrop for treatment.
