Fire Destroys Glastonbury (CT) Manufacturer

Firefighters from more than a half-dozen towns controlled a fire that broke out in a plastics factory in Roaring Brook Plaza, reports courant.com.

The fire was reported by an employee at about 11:30 a.m. at the Preferred Fixture Manufacturing Co. factory in an industrial complex across the road from the town’s Eastbury Pond. When firefighters arrived the building was fully engulfed in flames. Until recently, the business was known as Preferred Plastics.

Town Fire Marshal Christopher N. Siwy said he couldn’t remember a factory fire this size in town.

“It was a defensive attack from the get go,” he said. “It was intense and you don’t want to jeopardize firefighters and you want to keep the fire from spreading. It was basically a surround and drown attack.”

Siwy said the fire was knocked down several hours later but he expected crews to be on scene “until the sun comes up” due to numerous hot spots. The business’ 50 to 70 employees were out of the building when firefighters arrived. No firefighters were injured battling the blaze, Siwy said.
