Three people and one dog escaped uninjured from a Town of Ithaca home that was destroyed in a Monday afternoon fire, reports ithacajournal.com.
Firefighters were called shortly after 1:30 p.m. to a house fire at 222 Tareyton Drive.
Firefighters reported that they could see smoke at 1:40 p.m. from Route 13 as they drove to the scene, according to Tompkins County emergency radio reports.
The home’s garage was burnt level to the ground, and at least one car was destroyed in the fire. Firefighters entered the home with air tanks strapped to their backs, hosing down a gutted interior. They emerged with suits covered by charred material.
The house is a total loss, Cayuga Heights Fire Chief George Tamborelle said. No residents or firefighters were injured during the incident, he added.
“First arriving units found heavy fire involvement, started suppression with the assistance of the other departments,” Tamborelle said.
An Ithaca Fire Department investigation team is working to determine what caused the fire, he added. Cayuga Heights Fire Department was assisted on scene by Ithaca, Lansing and Dryden fire departments. New York State Electric & Gas Corp. was called to shut down utilities.
