Firefighter Airlifted after Being Burned at MD Fire

One firefighter was airlifted after sustaining burn injuries at a structure fire in Hagerstown, Maryland, according to reports.

Washington County (MD) Division Of Emergency Services reported that at 10:17 a.m. on Tuesday, June 29, 2021, the Washington County 911 Center began to receive numerous telephone calls reporting a structure fire at 17847 Carter Lane.

Units from Funkstown, Fairplay, Halfway, Hagerstown, and Williamsport were alerted to respond. As units responded, they saw a large column of smoke and additional resources were requested.

Units from Funkstown arrived at 10:27 a.m. and encountered a large garage-style building with a second-floor apartment heavily engulfed in flames. During initial firefighting operations, three firefighters were injured. One firefighter suffered burns and was flown by Maryland State Police – Aviation Command to The Burn Center at Medstar Washington Hospital Center. The remaining firefighters were transported by ambulance to Meritus Health for evaluation.

Additional fire and EMS units were brought to the scene to control the fire and provide treatment to the injured firefighters. Companies from Washington, Frederick, and Berkeley Counties along with the Hagerstown Fire Department and the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal responded, bringing 76 firefighters.

Water supply was provided by both hydrants and tankers as firefighters fought to control the fire. The fire was brought under control by noon and was contained to the building of origin. No civilians were injured. The incident is being investigated by the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office.
