Research Project Examines Firefighter Chemical and Cardiosvascular Exposures

On June 27, 2016, Fire Engineering will be on hand to report on a joint study investigating fire service chemical and cardiovascular exposures.

Our live coverage of this research event–a collaborative effort between the Illinois Fire Services Institute (IFSI), UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute, and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health–will be Webcast live from the IFSI campus. Last summer, the groups collected data from firefighters participating in scenarios using common household furnishings, but there was significant interest in comparing that data set to exposures from typical live-fire training scenarios. The project will include 24 firefighters participating in three separate scenarios from June 25-30.

The data and conclusions and assumptions that will be gathered from this particular study will also help guide other projects, and may impact the development of firefighting gear as well as training facilities.
