Retired Nashua Fire Rescue Lt. Jessica Wyman died in 2023 from line-of-duty occupational cancer from her 26 years as a firefighter, officials have decided.

After an investigation, the department ruled that Wyman’s death was directly related to her years of service in Nashua, Merrimack and the New Hampshire Fire Academy. Gov. Chris Sununu and the Executive Council approved death benefits for Wyman’s family Wednesday at their meeting in Bethlehem.

Wyman died on Nov. 28, 2023.

With the support of Nashua Mayor Jim Donchess, the Fiscal Year 2025 city budget included additional money to ensure that every active member of the fire department has access to screenings to detect cancer in its earliest form, officials said.
