The U.S. Fire Administration announced the death of a firefighter operating at the scene of a wildland fire in Oregon.

On Monday, August 23, 2021, while working at the Gales Wildland Fire, GE Forestry Firefighter/Squad Boss Frumencio Ruiz Carapia, 56, was killed when he was struck by a falling tree.

According to the sheriff’s office, an investigation suggests that the accident wasn’t the result of any tree cutting, but that the tree unexpectedly snapped and fell to the ground.
