The Beaumont Fire and Rescue, the Fire Museum of Texas and International Association of Firefighters Local No. 399 will unveil The State of Texas Firefighter Memorial Saturday, April 16, 9 a.m. at C.A. Pete Shelton Plaza, 400 Walnut St. in Beaumont, Texas.
This memorial is the first of its kind to honor all present, past and fallen firefighters of Texas.
Beaumont-native artist Ron Petitt designed the memorial and sculpted the life like figures in his studio in Loveland, Colo. The memorial was cast at a foundry near his home and transported to Beaumont for installation.
The memorial’s two bronze firefighter sculptures, which stand over 6 feet tall and weigh 350 to 400 pounds, will stand atop an 18-inch black granite pedestal. The addition of the life-sized bronze firefighters conducting a fire scene and the new community pavilion contributes to the city of Beaumont’s downtown improvements.
The plaza also includes brick pavers naming deceased and fallen firefighters from across the state of Texas, a memorial to the fallen New York firefighters of Sept. 11, 2001, and a 24-foot Dalmatian-spotted fire hydrant donated by Walt Disney in 1999. The total investment for plaza improvements totals approximately $260,000.
The Fire Museum of Texas opened in 1986 and is endorsed by the Firemen’s and Fire Marshals’ Association of Texas as “The Official Fire Museum of Texas.” The museum receives more than 10,000 visitors annually from around the world.
