Firefighter Recounts Des Moines River Rescue

A man is recovering in the hospital after firefighters saved his life from drowning in icy water in the Des Moines River, reports kcci.com.

Treading water and clinging to chunks of ice, the man struggled to keep his head above the freezing water.

When the Des Moines water rescue team arrived to bring him a boat, one rescuer even fell through the ice in an attempt to get to him.

One of the rescuers said he’s glad crews acted as quickly as they did because the outcome could have been much different.

“I’m sure he was cold. It had to be cold, and moving water is worse than standing water as far as taking your body heat away,” said firefighter Corey Comito.
