Firefighter Sues Staten Island (NY) Resident for Injury Sustained During Call

An FDNY firefighter is suing a Staten Island (NY) homeowner for an injury he reportedly sustained during a basement fire three years ago.

According to an NBC report (http://bit.ly/1yqP6ag), Andrew Cannon, the firefighter in question, filed a lawsuit against homeowner Kudar Uday for a shoulder injury he suffered during the fire.

The report said homeowners used to be protected from such suits by something called the “Firefighters Rule,” which said firefighters assume a risk when they report to a fire and cannot sue afterward, but that rule was abolished in the 1960s.

Nowadays firefighters can sue homeowners saying that the fire started due to negligence, such those started by overloaded power supplies, candles next to curtains, and other hazardous situations.
