Firefighters at the Scene of Deadly California Collision

A tour bus collided with two other vehicles Sunday evening at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Highway 38 near Yucaipa, California.

The bus had 38 passengers on board. At the time of this writing there have been eight fatalities: seven from the bus died at the scene and one died this morning at the hospital from injuries sustained when his truck was struck by the bus.

The bus was from Tijuana, Mexico, and had taken a group of people up to Big Bear for a day of snow skiing. While returning, the bus reportedly lost the ability to brake and began down the mountain road at a high rate of speed. As the bus approached the bottom of the hill where the road narrows, it struck two vehicles, one head-on. The bus then rolled over, ending up on its wheels but ejecting many of its passengers.

Units from CALFIRE were first on scene and requested additional units. Units from San Bernardino County, Redlands City, San Bernardino City, Loma Linda City, San Manuel, as well as AMR responded to help treat and transport the injured.
