NEPTUNE TOWNSHIP —A structure fire at 50 Main Avenue in downtown Ocean Grove is being fought by over 100 firefighters battling wind and difficult exposures.
Mutual aid responses from the area were helping in the efforts to suppress the raging fire. Crews attacked from the rear of the building on Heck Avenue, one street south of the building, while other firefighters hosed down buildings directly adjacent on either side to protect adjacent buildings.
By nightfall, the fire continued to burn in the downtown where businesses, which line the bottom level, are close together.
Main Avenue was blocked off to traffic for five blocks, between Pennsylvania and Beach avenues, and one street directly north and south of the building were also closed in the vicinity of the fire. Hoses stretched throughout the downtown.
A part of Neptune Township, Ocean Grove started as a Methodist camp meeting site and has evolved into a Victorian-style artsy historic oceanfront district between Asbury Park and Bradley Beach.
