Firefighters battled a fire Monday that impacted multiple floors of a residential high-rise building in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, according to reports.
CBC News reported that the fire in the city’s Coal Harbour neighborhood went to multple alarms, but firefighters were able to get the fire under control by 5 p.m. local time. More than 50 firefighters and more than a dozen pieces of firefighting equipment were deployed to the scene of the fire, but there were no reported injuries.
DH News reported that explosions were heard before the fire, with flames reportedly extending 20 feet out the windows and debris sent falling into the streets below; the department indicated that the falling debris ignited hedges and combustibles.
According to a release from the department, at 3:52 p.m. on Monday, October 21, 2024, firefighters responded to a fire alarm activation at 1500 Alberni Street. While crews were investigating the alarms, another crew responding to the building saw heavy flames coming from the building’s 20th and 21st floors.
The floors above the first floor were not sprinklered, which resulted in heavy and rapid fire spread to upper levels. Three units suffered heavy fire and smoke damage and were deemed not habitable, while several units below sustained water damage.
