Firefighters From Nearly 20 Departments Flock to Derry (NH) to Douse Brush Fire

DERRY — A 3-alarm brush fire Wednesday afternoon had a portion of Interstate 93 shut down between Derry and Windham as firefighters fought the wind to gain control of the flames.

Members of the Derry Fire Department were called to the area of Fordway Extension along I-93 around 1 p.m. after receiving multiple 911 calls about a brush fire, fire officials said in a statement. Shortly after, another series of 911 calls came in about a secondary brush fire along I-93 in Windham.

Due to the high winds, the brush fires spread quickly and surrounding fire departments and mutual aid partners were called in to assist.

A portion of the Fordway Extension between Bowers and Montgomery Farm roads was closed for several hours until the fire was under control around 3 p.m.

No civilians were injured but one firefighter sustained a minor injury but was quickly treated and returned back to work.

Overnight crews stayed on scene to monitor the brush and make sure the fire was fully extinguished.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Derry Fire Prevention Bureau and the Derry Fire Marshal.

The Derry Fire Department was assisted by Atkinson, Auburn, Bedford, Candia, Chester, Hampstead, Hudson, Hooksett, Londonderry, Manchester, Pelham, Pembroke, Plaistow, Raymond, Salem and Sandown fire departments, the Derry Police Department, the New Hampshire State Police, the New Hampshire Department of Transportation, the Southern New Hampshire Regional HAZMAT Team, the Derry Department of Public Works, The New Hampshire Division of Forests and Lands and the Derry CERT team.

In total, over 35 apparatus and more than 50 personnel responded.

High winds are anticipated for today and the Derry Fire Department would like to remind residents that open burning is not permitted in Derry at this time.
