Firefighters Injured in Possible Hazmat Incident During RI Fire

Two firefighters were hospitalized and a team of doctors and nurses brought in to conduct decontamination after a fire in a large mill building today in Central Falls, Rhode Island.

One firefighter suffered chest pains and another had difficulty breathing during the fire at General Polymer Inc., according to The Providence Journal (http://bit.ly/11Zny6z).

The firefighters are believed to have been exposed to toluene, a colorless liquid used in making paints and paint thinners. Other firefighters on scene were decontaminated as a precaution.

The fire went to five alarms in  the 75,000-square-foot custom paint company when a vat ignited.
