Firefighters Respond to Five-Alarm IL Recycling Facility Fire

Firefighters from numerous departments responded to a fire that went to at least five alarms in Madison, Illinois.

There were recycling batteries inside the building where the original fire had started, reports said. There were 200 personnel on scene at Interco Recycling, and multiple explosions were reported. Officials said it appeared that two buildings were destroyed in the fire.

FOX 2 News reported that people living in the vicinity were asked to shelter in place, turn off their air conditioning, and close windows.

Smoke was visible for more than 10 miles away at the peak of the fire, and around 2 p.m. a strong burning smell persisted in downtown St. Louis, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
