Firefighters Respond to Palisades Park (NJ) Structure Fire

Article and photo by Ron Jeffers

Smoke alarms did their job when Palisades Park (NJ) volunteer firefighters were toned out to an alarm activation in a Bergen Boulevard two-story commercial building shortly after 6 a.m. on July 23. They arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the second floor of the approximately 100 x 75-foot structure.

Palisades Park Fire Chief Stephen Killion believes the fire started on the second-floor and spread to the cockloft, and later through the roof. Mutual aid was ordered brining in East Bergen county mutual aid units to the scene. The structure contained a law office, reality company, title agency and skin care office.

Heavy smoke consumed the second-floor and a defensive attack went into operation. This included the use of two ladder pipes and a tower ladder.

Owners of the businesses arrived to watch the building burn from across the street, where EMS set up a rehab area. News helicopters covering the morning rush also converged over the scene to capture excellent video.

The fire was under control by 8:30 a.m. Mutual aid units at the scene included companies from Ridgefield, Cliffside Park, Englewood, Leonia, Fort Lee, and Edgewater.
