Firefighters Return for the Third Time for a Fire at an Old Saybrook (CT) Home

Jan. 25—OLD SAYBROOK — Firefighters on Saturday returned for the third time to an Otter Cove Drive home that was nearly destroyed in a blaze Thursday night after the fire reignited, officials said.

Firefighters were initially called to the home just after 7 p.m. Thursday for a report of a roof on fire. On their way to the scene, one firefighter reported seeing the blaze in the skyline before getting to the two-story, wood home, according to Chief Joe Johnson.

Upon arrival, they found a large home engulfed in flames. The family had escaped safely. Multiple fire departments from the valley shore responded to assist in fighting the fire.

Because there are no hydrants in the immediate area, firefighters were forced to obtain water from nearby ponds and streams, which made fighting the fire challenging.

The blaze displaced the family, but there were no reported civilian injuries. The Old Saybrook Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire, according to Johnson.

Mutual aid units were called to the scene Thursday, and the Fire Department left the home just after midnight. But they were called back to the home around 3 a.m. Friday after another section of the house had caught fire.

“It must have been something buried up underneath where the roof collapsed that we couldn’t get or see,” Johnson said.

Crews again returned to the residence Saturday morning and used a fire hydrant on Essex Street to put out the blaze. Officials said the volume of water needed resulted in low water pressure and discoloration in the area.

“The Old Saybrook Fire Department wishes to extend our most sincere apologies to the residents of Floral Park,” officials said.
