Old Town Harpers Ferry residents credit local volunteers and firefighters for saving the national park from an early morning fire, reports wusa9.com.
While the historic area was untouched, many local businesses were destroyed by the fire, which took firefighters more than two hours to extinguish.
Crews from several jurisdictions responded to the three-alarm fire at commercial buildings on High Street early Thursday morning. A pub, an ice cream shop and three stores filled with unique artisan items were destroyed. Two of those buildings dated back to before the Civil War, when Harpers Ferry, at the intersection of the Potomac and Shenandoah, were home to an iron works and national armory.
The call about the fire on High Street came in at 3:15 a.m., according to Jefferson County emergency officials. Five counties were involved in battling the fire, with Loudoun County, Frederick County, Washington County and Berkeley County all providing mutual aid.
No one was injured, but dramatic video shot by resident Ron Clark shows the terror that residents experienced.
