Florida Firefighter Recovering After Getting Burned in ‘Flash Fire’

A veteran Indian River County (FL) firefighter was burned in a “flash fire” while work was being done on the department’s marine unit inside a fire station.

WPTV reported (http://bit.ly/RC6O6U) that Dustin Hawkins, an 11-year veteran firefighter, suffered burns on his face, neck, and forearms in the Thursday incident. He was listed in fair condition at an area medical facility.

RAPID INTERVENTION IN THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT

Hawkins was reportedly on the boat with two other people. Assistant Chief Brian Burkeen said the presence of these other two enabled firefighters to rapidly assist their injured colleage and extinguish the fire.

The boat did not suffer any serious damage. An internal investigation is ongoing.
