Forest Service Firefighter Killed Fighting Northern California Wildfire

A 28-year-old firefighter assigned to a wildfire burning in the Modoc National Forest in northeast California was killed when part of a tree fell on him late Monday, reports News 10 ABC.

Luke Sheehy, of Susanville, was a California Smokejumper based out of Redding, said a U.S. Forest Service spokesperson.

Efforts to revive Sheehy were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at an Alturas hospital.

California Smokejumpers are a division of the U.S. Forest Service. Members are skydiver/firefighters flown into fire incidents as part of initial firefighting tactics, states the division’s website.

The fire Sheehy was fighting, the Saddle Back Fire, broke out about 3 p.m. Monday and was believed to have been started by a lightning strike.
