Firefighters battled a four-alarm fire on Saturday night at the Hotel InterContinental in New Orleans, reports WDSU 6 New Orleans.
A hotel employee said the fire started in the laundry room, and the entire InterContinental Hotel was evacuated.
The fire started about 6 p.m. in the laundry room. By 6:45 p.m. the New Orleans Fire Department had struck three-alarms — and then a fourth alarm was struck just after 7 p.m.
Fire officials said the fire was put out shortly after 7:30 p.m., and noted the added alarms were used primarily to assist in the ventilation, overhaul and salvage effort.
No one was hurt, and the fire itself was contained within a laundry facility on the fourth floor. Sprinklers helped keep the flames from spreading, officials told WDSU.
Damage, however, was significant. Smoke permeated part of the hotel and water from the sprinklers and from hoses seeped into the lower floors of the high rise building, including the lobby.
About 650 guests were allowed back inside late Saturday to get their belongings and were relocated to other hotels in the city. The property was about 85 percent occupied at the time of the fire.
