Four people escaped unharmed Tuesday morning from a fire that burned for more than two hours at their Charleston apartment building, reports postandcourier.com (http://bit.ly/1P5Urci)
Crews from the Charleston Fire Department responded before 8 a.m. to the fire at 7 Charles St., an alleyway near Cannon and St. Philip streets.
The building is made up of two structures connected by a common main floor, fire spokesman Ryan Kunitzer said. The Red Cross is assisting two families who were displaced by the fire.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known. The building appeared to have been destroyed.
Plumes of smoke were apparent for hours to motorists on the James Island connector and the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge.
