Four Pets Die in Moline (IA) Fire

Moline firefighters are investigating the cause of a blaze Friday afternoon at a home in which four pets died.

According to a news release issued by the Moline Fire Department, at 3:46 p.m. Friday firefighters were sent to 3172 15th Ave. to investigate a report of a structure fire.

Fire crews arrived on the scene within five minutes to find heavy smoke and flames visible from the one-story, single-family home.

The two occupants of the home got out before the fire department arrived.

Molline Fire Marshal Mitch Cunningham said the house had working fire alarms. However, before the smoke detectors activated, the occupants saw and then smelled the smoke advancing toward their location in the rear of the home.

The smoke detectors activated while the occupants were leaving the house.

While the occupants were able to escape, four pets in the home died in the fire.

Firefighters conducted an aggressive attack on the fire while other firefighters conducted a thorough search of the residence.

The fire was brought under control in about 20 minutes. Crews remained on the scene for about two hours to conduct overhaul and assist with the investigation.

Cunningham said this “tragic event” served as a reminder during the holiday season for people to ensure that smoke detectors were in good working order. Smoke detectors should be tested regularly, and all household members should be familiar with fire evacuation procedures, he said.

The fire remains under investigation by the Moline Fire Department’s Bureau of Investigations.

The Moline Fire Department was assisted by fire departments from East Moline, Rock Island and the Rock Island Arsenal. Additional support came from the Moline Water Department, Moline Street Department and MidAmerican Energy. The Moline Second Alarmers assisted with air supply and rehabilitation services. Genesis Ambulance assisted by responding to other emergencies in the city during the incident.
