A 4-year-old was killed and two other people were seriously injured after a fire broke out in a two-family home in North Adams late Tuesday night, fire officials said.
North Adams firefighters went to 188 West Shaft Road for a report of a possible fire just after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jake Wark, a spokesman for the Department of Fire Services, said in an email. Arriving firefighters found a two-story, two-family home “fully involved” with fire.
When firefighters arrived, five occupants were outside, two of whom were seriously injured, Wark said. One person was unaccounted for and later located dead inside. They were not immediately identified.
It took firefighters about an hour to put out most of the flames, but crews were still working at the scene “will into the morning,” Wark said.
“On behalf of the North Adams Fire Department, I want to express our heartfelt condolences to the family that lost a loved one and their home,” said North Adams Fire Chief Brent Lefebvre. “This is a terrible loss for them and our community.”
The origin and cause of the fire remain under investigation.
