Supporters raised more than $40K in a GoFundMe campaign for Fire Department of New York (FDNY) Deputy Chief Paul Mannix, who was suspended for 50 days in relation to apparent leaks to the press, according to the New York Post. The paper has recently ran a number of stories regarding some minorities and women getting special treatment in the FDNY despite a lack of qualifications.
The Post reports that FDNY Firefighter Anthony Henry of Engine 10 started the campaign to raise funds for Mannix, and purportedly faced scrutiny from the department over the move.
Some 660 people gave $41,588 in seven days, the GoFundMe site says. Mannix’s family will get $35K with the rest going to a firefighter cause of his choice, the report said.
Mannix, founder of Merit Matters, which opposed hiring quotas, recently disbanded the group.
