Girl Dies in San Jose CA Fire

A seven-year-old San Jose girl (CA) died in a fire in her home late Monday, one of two fatal fire in the city overnight, reports the San Francisco Chronicle.

Mariah Gomez died in a fire in a remodeled garage where she and her 4-year-old sister slept, authorities said.

Around 11:30 p.m. the younger girl came running into the house with her hair on fire, said fire Capt. Cleo Doss. While the mother helped her daughter, the girls’ grandmother ran to the garage to try to save Mariah.

The garage was fully engulfed in flames, however, and the grandmother could not reach the girl.

The younger girl suffered minor burns, Doss said. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and it is not clear if the garage had smoke detectors.

A few hours earlier, two people died in a separate fire, Doss said.

Firefighters arrived at 8:27 p.m. as flames poured from the front of the home. Inside, firefighters found a woman in her 80s collapsed on the floor, Doss said.

Rescuers performed CPR but were unable to save the woman, Doss said. Her name has not been released.

Once the fire was under control, firefighters found a second victim dead inside the home whose gender has not been determined.
