Greene County (GA) Battalion Chief Killed in Explosion

A battalion chief with Greene County (GA) Fire Rescue has died in the line of duty, according to reports.

Battalion Chief Chris Eddy was killed in an explosion while operating at the scene of a truck fire with other firefighters, according to the Union Reporter.

The explosion happened shortly before 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 4, 2024, on Ga. Route 15 near Lick Skillet Road, on the outskirts of Greensboro, the report noted.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our brother, but even more so by the loss of an incredible leader,” the department posted on its Facebook page. “Battalion Chief Eddy touched so many lives, and his legacy will forever inspire us. Thank you for standing by the men and women of GC Public Safety as we honor his memory. Please keep his wife Lindsey, son Bryson and the rest of his family in your thoughts and prayers as we all try to begin this new life without him.”

The death marks another instance of a firefighter killed or injured in the line of duty during a vehicle blast. In June of this year, Los Angeles County (CA) Firefighter Andrew Pontious was killed and another firefighter was injured after an explosion during a truck fire. Earlier this year, nine City of Los Angeles (CA) firefighters were injured in an explosion during a semi fire that involved compressed natural gas.
