Hammond (IN) Firefighter Injured After Falling Through Floor at House Fire

A Hammond firefighter injured his ankle injury and suffered smoke inhalation after falling through a floor while battling a house fire that engulfed three closely situated buildings.

The department was called to 1244 121st in Hammond on Tuesday for a house fire that spread to a next-door apartment building. While battling the house fire, the firefighter fell through the floor and called a mayday. Other firefighters were able to quickly extricate the injured man.

Multiple fire departments, including those from East Chicago, Whiting, Gary, Hobart, and Michigan City, responded to the scene to assist with the fire and provide support at the hospital.

“Hammond Firefighters would like to thank our brothers and sisters of EC, Whiting, Gary, Hobart, and Michigan City who immediately responded to the scene or via phone to help in anyway,” Hammond Firefighters Local 556 said via Facebook.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No other injuries were reported.
