Heat Sends Nine New Jersey Firefighters to Hospital

A five-alarm fire that destroyed a Passaic (NJ) apartment building also told its toll on the firefighters, battling the heat along with the flames, reports News 12 New Jersey.

Passaic authorities say nine firefighters were brought to St. Mary’s Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion.

“If you’re a firefighter in this heat, it’s especially deadly,” says Vanessa Warren of St. Mary’s. “They have hundreds of pounds of gear on and they’re entering a situation where the heat is intense.”
