A 25-year-old firefighter with a year-and-a-half on the job died in a three-alarm fire in a Honolulu apartment Monday night.
The fire broke out in a walk-up apartment at 1645 Young Street at about 7:45 p.m. Firefighters arrived at the scene and found smoke showing, Hawaii News Now reports.
Two firefighters entered the structure to conduct a search of the second floor. Shortly afterward a Mayday was called. One firefighter made it out by himself. Another firefighter was found on the first floor and extricated. The fire department also reported a roof collapsed during the fire.
In addition to the firefighter who died, four other firefighters were hospitalized for the night, Honolulu Fire Chief Kalani Hao told reporters. The Honolulu Fire Department will release more information about the fire later Tuesday.
