High-Rise Fire in Philly: 9 Firefighters, 3 Residents Injured

North Philadelphia, PA – Firefighters responded to a 2-alarm fire on the eighth floor of a high-rise public housing apartment building in North Philadelphia at approximately 5:45 a.m. Wednesday morning according to reports from WTXF Fox29 the Philadelphia Inquirer at Philly.com. Nine firefighters and approximately a dozen people were injured according to reports and many residents were evacuated. 

Fire crews arrived at the Philadelphia Housing Authority building at 1516 Judson Way, near North 24th and West Jefferson Streets to begin fighting the fire but as the incident escalated, a second alarm was sounded at about 6:20 a.m. The fire was centered in one apartment, according to reports, and was declared under control at 7:06 a.m. 

Executive Fire Chief Daniel Williams reported that one firefighter was in critical but stable condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania after being transferred from Hahnemann University Hospital. Five additional firefighters were treated and released at approximately 10 a.m. Williams said a sixth firefighter was scheduled for release this morning. Fire Officials reported a woman, boy and girl, were also injured but their conditions could not be confirmed.

Approximately 100 residents, many children, were transported to the John F. Reynolds School for temporary shelter. Firefighters remained to keep embers from reigniting and to remove any additional residents. The incident is currently under investigation.
