A veteran firefighter with the Ionia (IA) Volunteer Fire Department was killed while responding to a call Sunday, according to a release from the department on social media.

Tony Hoffman, 43, a 17-year veteran of the department, was en route to a field fire when he was involved in a UTV rollover accident and passed away due to injuries suffered in the mishap.

KCCI.com reported that Hoffman was following a fire apparatus, which moved to pass another vehicle. When Hoffman attempted to pass as well, he struck the apparatus, and subsequently succumbed to the injuries he sustained.

The death comes quickly on the heels of several other firefighter fatalities in vehicle accidents, including a 20-year-old Abingdon (VA) firefighter who was killed in a crash and a West Whiteland (PA) firefighter who died in an accident that injured another member.
