Cincinnati-on-the-Ohio, one of America’s finer cities, will be the scene of the 105th Annual Conference of the International Association of Fire Chiefs beginning on September 10th with the official opening and ending on September 14th with the newly elected president handling the gavel at the final business session. Registration for the conference begins on Saturday, September 9th and will continue through Wednesday, September 13th in the Cincinnati Convention Center where all conference sessions will be held.
The official opening of the conference starts at 3:30 p.m. with Chief John L. Swindle, president of the IAFC, and Host Chief Bert A. Lugananni presiding. Swindle, Lugananni and other Cincinnati officials will offer their greetings to the attendees. Following this, the traditional memorial services will be held.
Business session
All the major business sessions and conference proceedings will be held at the convention center complex. The first business session will be presided over by Chief Swindle starting at 10 a.m. Monday, September 11th. It will be followed by presentations from Chief Kenji Ojoka, Tokyo, Douglas Harman, city manager of Alexandria, Va., who will discuss “The City Manager’s View of the Fire Chief,” and William V. Donaldson, city manager, Cincinnati, who will cover “The City Manager’s View of the Fire Service.”
The second business session at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday will be conducted by Chief Jim Shern, first vice president. Business included in this meeting will cover a report on the IAFC Foundation by John F. Hurley, the foundation’s resident and a status report on the Executive Development II Grant by Chief David B. Gratz.
Wednesday’s third business session has Second Vice President R. S. Rockenbach presiding over a Fire Safety Education Panel that includes Trudy McKeon Daly, Hartford Insurance Company, Cathy Hynson, R. N., Ashland, Va., and Laura Buchbinder of the National Fire Prevention and Control Administration.
The Medical Advisory Committee will hold a separate business meeting at 9 a.m. on Monday. The various committees of the IAFC will meet as indicated in the following program.
Workshops, which have become standard for the IAFC conference in recent years, will take over the entire afternoons of Monday and Tuesday, with a separate session for each major committee: metropolitan, urban, volunteer, and medical.
The Metropolitan Chiefs will look at “Public Fire Protection Evaluation” and “Hazardous Materials—Problems and Solutions.” Another feature for this group will be an update on the National Fire Academy given by Superintendent Dave McCormack.
The Urban Chiefs program had not been established at the time of this writing, but the Volunteers Committee has come up with an interesting program. On Monday, there will be a panel discussion on the work done with breathing apparatus and fire fighters’ gloves by OSHA and NIOSH. Tuesday’s session will be given over to “Women in the Volunteer Fire Service.”
The Medical Advisory Council’s workshops consist of three presentations on EMS systems and one each on EMS communications and the EMT apprenticeship program.
The ladies program begins with a reception honoring Mrs. John Swindle and the wives and guests of the officers and directors of the IAFC at the Caprice Suite, Netherlands Hilton Hotel, on Sunday at 1 p.m. Monday includes a luncheon at the Hilton followed by a behind-the-scenes look at the lives of the actors and actresses living the daytime soap operas, plus some clips of the earliest daytime dramas. Tuesday is a free day for the ladies, but no-host tours of selected area attractions are available.
However, the Ladies Hospitality Room will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday at the Hilton. Information, demonstrations and light refreshments will be available.
Social activities
Social activities will really begin on Sunday night when the Box 15 holds its reception at Stouffer’s Towers Hotel beginning at 8 p.m. The reception includes dancing and refreshments— admission by invitation only.
Carrying on a tradition that was established at the IAFC conference in Boston 13 years ago, the Fire Equipment Manufacturers and Services Association will hold their renowned FEMSA Night in the Ballroom, Stouffers Hotel, on Tuesday at 8 p.m. Admission is open to all conference registrants (badge necessary) and their wives. Music and entertainment will consist of a six-piece band, a stand-up comedian, a singer who is a local TV personality, and Bob Thomas, the well-known virtuoso of banjo and guitar. Refreshments will be served as in the past.
Monday night will be hosted by Chief Lugananni and the Cincinnati Fire Department—a Septemberfest. It will be held outdoors at Yeatman’s Cave immediately to the east of the coliseum.
Finally, there is the 105th Annual Conference Banquet at the Netherlands Hilton Hotel in the Pavillion Caprice starting at 7 p.m. The evening includes the installation of officers which will be followed by entertainment.
