Fairfax, VA – The International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) installed Randy R. Bruegman, fire chief of Clackamas County Fire District #1 in Milwaukie, OR, as president on Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, at the annual Fire-Rescue International conference in Kansas City, MO.
As president, Bruegman will provide leadership to a 16-member board and 30-member staff located in Fairfax, VA, and will serve as the primary spokesperson for the association on matters of national and international interest. He will be called to testify at House and Senate hearings and is the representative dignitary for the association in all major political and international functions.
Chief Bruegman began his career as a volunteer fire fighter in Nebraska. He was subsequently hired as a fire fighter in Ft. Collins, CO, where he served in a variety of positions, including engineer, inspector, lieutenant, captain and battalion chief. He has served as the fire chief for the City of Campbell, CA, and for the Village of Hoffman Estates, IL, before his appointment as the fire chief of Clackamas County Fire District #1 in 1996.
A noted author and lecturer on topics such as leadership and managing change in the fire service, he is a contributing author of fire service literature, including Fire Attack, The Strategy and Tactics of Initial Company Response, Making a Difference, The Fire Officer Role, Surviving Haz-Mat, Haz-Mat for First Responders, The Volunteer Firefighter, A Breed Apart and Exceeding Customer Expectations.
Chief Bruegman served on the Accreditation Task Force for the IAFC for eight years, six years as vice chairman. He served as chairman of the Commission on Fire Accreditation International for three years, from 1997-2000. He is a member of the Institute of Fire Engineers, is a Chief Fire Officer Designate and is a member of National Fire Protection Association.
He has an associate’s degree in fire science, a bachelor’s degree in business and a master’s degree in management. He serves as a member of the Review Panel for Building and Fire Research for the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). He was elected as first vice president of the IAFC in August 2001.
