Colorado Springs, CO
– Fire fighters from the United States and Canada who perished in the line of duty over the past year will be honored at the 25th Annual Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial Ceremony on Saturday, September 17.

“We will honor the lives and service of the 87 fire fighters who died in the line of duty by adding their names to our Wall of Honor. We must never forget the sacrifice they made,” International Association of Fire Fighters General President Harold Schaitberger said.

Also added to the wall will be Vincent J. Bollon, the legendary General Secretary-Treasurer of the IAFF who passed away on March 28, 2011. General Secretary-Treasurer Bollon also was a New York City fire fighter and fire officer for more than 30 years.

The ceremony begins at 1 p.m. at Memorial Park, at the corner of Hancock and Pikes Peak avenues. The fire fighters being honored this year died in the line of duty from June 1, 2010 through June 1, 2011. Some fire fighters who died prior to June 1, 2010, but were reported during the past year also will be honored. A complete list of those whose names will be added to the Wall of Honor is online at: http://www.iaff.org/hs/ffm/wall/index.aspx

Other details about the service are here: http://www.iaff.org/hs/ffm/thisyear/index.aspx

The memorial service will be streamed live online and can be viewed here: http://www.koaa.com/pages/live/

The IAFF Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial, with the addition this year of the names of 87 fire fighters, will bear the names of 2,497 fallen fire fighters who have died since 1976. Plans are underway to add all IAFF members who have died since February 28, 1918, when the IAFF was founded. Colorado Springs Fire Fighters Local 5 assists with the ceremony and is one of 18 locals that are original members of IAFF.
MEDIA: IAFF General President Harold Schaitberger will attend the memorial and address families of the fallen. He will be available for interviews.
