IAFF Media Contest Winners Announced
The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) 1979 Media Awards Contest was held recently in Washington D.C. First prize winners went to articles in the Bloomington, Ill., Daily Pantagraph and Toronto, Ont., Star; photos in the Racine, Wis., Journal-Times and Chicago, Ill., Sun-Times; a series of programs on Station KGW-TV of Portland, Or.; and a documentary series on Radio Station WMJW in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
In addition to the six categories for general circulation media, the contest includes a category for publications of local unions, won this year by Central Florida Local 2057.
Judges for the contest were Al Zack, director of public relations for the AFL-CIO, James F. Casey, editor of Fire Engineering, and Peter Gall of the Business Week editorial staff.
IAFF President William Howard McClennan commented, “I feel the news media, as exemplified in the winning entries chosen by our contest judges, are coming to a new realization of the toll that fire fighting takes as a prefession and the complexity fire fighters must deal with in doing their job.”
