IAFF Media Contest
The winners of the 1981 International Association of Fire Fighters media contest were recently announced by John A. Gannon, IAFF President.
Designed to recognize excellence in Fire service coverage through the media, this annual contest is open to reporters, photographers, and both radio and network broadcasters.
First prize winners are:
Newpaper story, less than 100,00 circulation, Ken Robinson, the Meriden, Conn., Morning Record and Journal.
Newspaper story, more than 100,000 circulation, Barbara Palermo and Frank Greenwalt, the Van Nuys, Calif., Valley News.
Newspaper photo, less than 100,000 circulation, Joe Zlomek in the Oneida, N.Y., Daily Dispatch.
Newspaper photo, more than 100,000 circulation, Vince Heptig in the Fort Worth, Tex., Star-Telegram.
Television news or feature coverage, Bob Norman and Joy Palit, WTNHTV, New Haven, Conn.
Radio commentary, Bob Schmidt, ABC News.
Local union publication, “Toronto Firefighter News,” Local 113, Toronto, Ont.
This year’s judges were: John M. Barry, managing editor of the AFL-CIO News, James F. Casey, retired editor of Fire Engineering and Alan Adams, editor and publisher of a Washington newsletter on labor-management relations.
