Wildfire Research Demonstration Set for IBHS Research Center in SC

The Institute for Business & Home Safety, the Savannah River National Laboratory, the US Forest Service’s Rocky Mountain Research Station and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Science & Technology Directorate invite the media to the IBHS Research Center, Richburg, South Carolina, on March 24, 2011, for a demonstration of the lab’s wildfire research.

Wildfire testing conducted at the IBHS Research Center will clearly demonstrate home ignition risks and ways to protect property in the 38 states that are at risk for this destructive natural hazard. This research will help property owners take control of and minimize their risk(s) by identifying vulnerable areas on their structures, and developing methods to make buildings more resistant to wildfire.

Wildfire Test Details:
  • IBHS researchers will conduct a full-scale wildfire simulation. A 1,200 square foot, one-story home will be on the turntable in the test chamber. The home will be subjected to radiant heat and a wind-blown ember shower to demonstrate differences in ignition potential between various construction techniques, building materials, and landscaping materials.
  • The demonstration will actually comprise several individual tests and is expected to last two hours.
  • Media representatives are invited to shoot stills and video footage of the home, inside and out, before the test.
  • Media representatives and other invited guests will view the test from an observation room with 18-foot tall, impact resistant windows into the test chamber.
  • Following the test, media can re-enter the test chamber to shoot stills and video footage of the home
