The ICMA-RC Vantagepoint Public Employee Memorial Scholarship Fund (ICMA-RC Memorial Scholarship Fund) is pleased to announce that 29 surviving children and spouses of fallen firefighters, police officers, and other public employees have been awarded post-secondary educational scholarships for the 2013-2014 academic year.
Established in 2001 by ICMA-RC and its Board of Directors, the ICMA-RC Memorial Scholarship Fund honors the lives of the nation’s city, county, and state government employees, including firefighters and police officers, who have died serving and protecting local communities.
To commemorate the sacrifice made by these individuals, five students, who are surviving children of fallen public employees and recipients of the ICMA-RC Memorial Scholarship Fund, were honored at a July 31 ceremony at the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City, MO. Public officials from the Missouri Lieutenant Governor’s Office, Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Missouri State Employees’ Retirement System, and Missouri Department of Transportation attended the reception and expressed their gratitude to the families for the sacrifice their loved ones made. Representatives from the Concerns of Police Survivors and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation also attended the event.
April Crockett, a past scholarship recipient and daughter of the late Terrance Crockett of the Kansas City Fire Department shared her gratitude for the ICMA-RC Memorial Scholarship Fund. “The ICMA-RC Memorial Scholarship Fund helped set the stage for my life,” Crockett said. “Because of assistance from the scholarship, I was able to complete my education and receive opportunities for internships in Los Angeles. It was an awesome opportunity, and I don’t know how I would have gotten there without the scholarship fund.”
ICMA-RC President and CEO, Joan McCallen praised the recipients’ outstanding achievements and wished them the best in their future endeavors. “The ICMA-RC Memorial Scholarship Fund pays tribute to those public employees who have made the ultimate sacrifice by allowing their children or spouses an opportunity to obtain a higher education,” McCallen said. “We are so proud of what these current and former recipients have achieved; and through their accomplishments, they are helping to honor their loved ones.”
Since its inception in 2001, the ICMA-RC Memorial Scholarship Fund has awarded over $900,000 in scholarships to more than 250 surviving children and spouses of public employees.
