IFSI Offers Two New Courses

The University of Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI) is introducing two new classes that fall under its Wildland Program.

NWCG (S-359) Medical Unit Leader is a 20-hour course designed to meet the training needs of an incident Medical Unit Leader, (MEDL), as outlined in the Wildland and Prescribed Fire Qualification System Guide, PMS 310-1, and the Position Task Book (PTB) that was developed for this position.  The first class was delivered during the week of January 27 at IFSI’s Champaign campus.

“This class is in great demand across the country and seldom offered. We thought it would be a good complement to the rest of our Wildland-focused classes,” Tom Richter said. Richter is Program Manager for IFSI Wildland Program. Seventeen students participated in the first class and traveled from as far away as Washington, Wyoming, Colorado and New Hampshire.

NWCG S-248 – Status/Check-In Recorder is the other new Wildland class being offered by IFSI. This two-day course is designed to introduce students to the tools and techniques used to perform the job of Status/ Check-In Recorder. It also offers a glimpse into a day in the life of the SCKN.  This class is being offered March 25-26, 2014 at IFSI’s Champaign campus.

Both classes are offered at no charge to those persons who are eligible under a grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.  They are among more than 20 Wildland classes offered by IFSI.

The Illinois Fire Service Institute is the statutory State Fire Academy for Illinois.  In addition to training provided at its Champaign campus, the Institute offers one-day hands-on classes for fire departments at Regional Training Centers and local fire stations across the State.  The mission of the Illinois Fire Service Institute is to help firefighters do their work through training, education, information and research.
