A proposal moving through the Illinois legislature would give unions a say in how many firefighters are on a city’s force.
The measure, which House lawmakers approved April 3, ensures firefighter staffing levels are part of contract negotiations between fire unions and city officials, according to a report on the Pekin Daily Times (http://bit.ly/1fNgMId) site.
Mayors and fire chiefs claim the measure tips leverage in favor of unions, taking hiring and layoff decisions away from local officials.
Fire union officials, however, who support the measure and represent thousands of firefighters in the state, have said city officials are using scare tactics to take away bargaining rights.
